Overview

Zanskar Regian lies South of Kargil - South West of Leh and west of Manali. Covering an area of 7000 sqkm., at an elevation 3500 – 7135 meters, Zanskar lies around two main branches of Zanskar River! Doda River originating Pensila (4400 mtrs) and second branch formed by two main tributaries known as Kargyak river with its source at Shingo– la (5091 mtrs) and Tsarap River with its source near Baralachala. These two Rivers confluence near Purne to form Lungnak River. Lungnak river (is also known as Lingti or Tsarap River) flows north – west along a narrow gorge towards central Zanskar (known as Zhungkhor), where it unites with Doda River to form Zanskar River. Zanskar River then takes a north eastern course until it joins the Indus in Nimoo. Buddhism gained its influence over Zanskar in the 8th century, so it’s dotted with ancient monasteries of Stongde, Karsha, Dzongkul, Sani, Bardan, Mune, and most spectacularly built and located monastery of Phukthal.

CAUTION ABOUT STAYING AT CAMPS: Accommodation options in remote areas outside Leh, like Alchi, Pangong, Tsomoriri, Hanle, Dha Hanu, etc. are very basic and sometimes guests face difficulties because of the same. Especially, at Pangong & Tsomoriri, due to harsh and extreme climate, very few non-locals can sustain and work in the area and for this reason the camps are always short of staff. The camps in the area are always running to their full capacity and are struggling to provide better services. The guests should expect delays in order/meals, sometime non-availability of food items, even milk. All the camps serve only simple vegetarian food. Room heaters and Hot water (to bathe) is not available in the camps. Since the camps are made up of temporary structures in a harsh climate, the guest should expect some wear and tear in the tents. Similarly, the bathroom fitting is also temporary, even the toilet seats are temporarily fixed so expect leakages and breakages in them. The sources of electricity are private generators which are switched off right after dinner in all the camps and the guests should not expect the electric supply for 24 hrs. Most of the camps are running in collaboration with other camps to maximize their inventory utilization and they are almost overbooked every day. Hence the guests should expect to stay at different camp than the one confirmed to them. The alternate camps will be of equivalent category. The camps in Pangong and Tsomoriri should not be compared to their counterparts in Nubra Valley.

Stay at these camps in remote areas should be opted by only those, who are okay with all the above short-comings. We will not entertain any refund request due to any of the above or any other reason not mentioned.
